Boldly succeeding by applying truth in a world mainly directed by false advertising requires understanding. How many of the most popular pitfalls do you know how to recognize on sight?

Cellulite is a word coined to help European salons and spas describe the dimpled condition of customers’ thighs and buttocks. Nicole Ronsard brought this term to American women in her 1973 book, Cellulite: Those Lumps, Bumps and Bulges You Couldn’t Lose Before. Absolving women of guilt because they didn’t understand the problem nor did they possess the tools of her beauty salon. She attempted to convince women that they have a special kind of fat run amok thriving on toxic waste that the body is powerless to eliminate. Today, legions of anti-cellulite products are hawked by multi-level-marketing companies and Internet web sites. Not far behind all the hype and hoopla is the FTC taking action against the marketers of most cellulite-reducing products. Get results by first getting the facts: cellulite can only be eliminated by losing body fat via a calorie restricted diet and maintaining lean muscle; this can only be done via strength exercise.

Toning and firming are buzz words that appeal to people but have no basis for meaning, biologically speaking. Use of these terms when speaking to a medical professional reveals that you are unschooled in how the body works. These are simply marketing words meant to lull people to a false sense of security to get them to part with their money for whatever pill, potion, or program advertised—and all without fear of working too hard, adding muscle and becoming the next Arnold or Suzie Schwarzenegger. Unfortunately, out of necessity to attract people, most specifically women, to the exercise arena, savvy marketers dating back to the 1950’s have created an imaginary divergence in the minds of people about what is required to get the desirable appearance from strength training.

Everyone needs to understand that the results sought are dictated by genetics which can be improved upon and controlled only by changing the body-shaping tissues we are born with. The majority of people, not using performance enhancing drugs, simply cannot become too muscular; most are in a constant battle and losing something closer to a pound of muscle per year past age 35. One who is aggressively strength training will be lucky to maintain their muscle mass as they advance in age.

The thought of becoming too muscular from strength training is irrational and only perpetuated by the media and marketers. Rest assured that if one ever did get too muscular in a particular part of the body, they would stop training that particular body-part for a few weeks and it will atrophy back to its original size. But back off too much or too frequently and the whole body will become shapeless and baggy. You see our body shape comes from its underlying bone structure and its muscle; overlying fat provides the body’s curves. Fat can be appealing when kept in check and only when there is sufficient underlying supportive muscle. Muscle is the foundation of our shape, metabolism and our functional ability: Become as lean as possible (or reasonable) via calorie control and as strong and enduring as possible through consistent high-intensity strength training. Then let nature do the rest.

Spot Reduction, the idea that one can get rid of fat in some “problem area” by exercising that part of the body is perhaps the most popular myth in fitness. This myth assumes:

  • You burn a significant number of extra calories due to the exercise for that particular body part—improbable.
  • You burn extra calories exclusively in the area targeted for spot reduction—impossible.
  • Your fat stores replenish the deficient energy substrate instead of calories from diet—improbable.
  • Your liver mobilizes fat specifically from the area targeted—improbable.

A good analogy is if you grab a bucket and start bailing water from one end of the pool you do not see water level change on one side of the pool as compared to the other…the water is lost from the pool uniformly. Fat is mobilized systemically as opposed to locally from one specific or targeted location.   

The too-tight pants test. Dare to be objective…this is the easiest cheapest way to make assessments about the effectiveness of your diet and exercise for fat-loss. Select a pair of non-stretch slacks or jeans you no longer wear because they are too uncomfortably tight. If from week to week and month to month these pants are easier to slip on then you are becoming leaner. This test is as good as any fancy body fat measuring device. Likewise, this test works in reverse as well. If the test pants begin to feel tight once again, then most likely you are regaining fat, signaling the imperative for you to redouble your efforts of rechecking your food diary and portion sizes.

How to Make Your New Year’s Resolution a Success

At the onset of each new calendar year, adults across the globe make resolutions for the year ahead. These resolutions are made to ensure the next 12 months are healthy and happy ones.

But as well-intentioned as New Year’s resolutions can be, they’re often less than successful and might even prove counter productive to those who don’t fulfill their resolutions. According to a recent British study conducted by researchers at of questions about their New Year’s resolutions, 78% failed to fulfill their resolutions. Failing to achieve a resolution can be dispiriting, and such a failure can make men and women feel worse about themselves than they did prior to making the resolution.

What is a person to do to make a resolution a success? Though there are no guarantees when it comes to New Year’s resolutions, there are steps men and women can take to increase the likelihood that their resolutions will prove successful.

• Be certain about your motives. The motives behind a resolution should be strong and unquestionable. If the motive is weak, the chances of failure increase. Before making a resolution, examine your motives. Gain an understanding of why it is important to you to make this change and if you think you can commit to the change for the next 12 months
and the years ahead. If you don’t fully understand why you’re doing something, you’re less likely to keep doing it.

• Only make one resolution. Change is never easy, especially when it comes to our habits. Making several resolutions makes it harder to achieve any of them, as it will require making several changes all at once. Instead, make just one resolution and then devote your full focus to making it a success.

• Be specific when setting goals. Perhaps the most popular resolution is to lose weight. But one of the reasons many people are unsuccessful when they resolve to lose weight is they aren’t specifi c enough. For example, losing one pound can be considered weight loss, but men and women who want to lose weight as their New Year’s resolution almost certainly want to lose more than a single pound. When making a resolution, be very specific (i.e., lose 20 lbs.) and set periodic goals (5 lbs. by the end of the first month) to give you something smaller to push for as you pursue the bigger goal.

• Report to a spouse or significant other. Another reason many resolutions fail is because there’s no watchdog to monitor progress or regression. When making a resolution, enlist the help of your spouse or significant other to hold you accountable. If you are single, make this person someone you won’t want to disappoint, such as a sibling, so you’re more motivated along the way.

• Make it a daily project. A New Year’s resolution should provide daily opportunities to make progress. There should be things you can do every day to make your resolution a success. A popular New Year’s resolution is to save money. This should be easy to pull off,
as men and women have opportunities each and every day to save money, including bringing their lunch to work instead of going out for lunch. If there’s something you can do every day to make the resolution a success, it’s more likely to quickly become part of your
routine, making it easier to achieve as a result.

CoolSculpting® leads to the death of only fat cells. This cell death occurs gently and gradually. The cells are removed naturally over the following weeks or months by the patient’s immune system.

There IS Help for Pain, Tingling, Swelling or Restlessness in Your Legs

What is EVLA and how is it different from sclerotherapy?

Endovenous Laser Ablation or EVLA is a minimally invasive technique that can bring immediate relief from the symptoms of varicose veins. The procedure usually takes less than an hour and uses laser energy delivered in a thin fi beroptic probe. The difference between EVLA and sclerotherapy is that EVLA is aimed at treating larger veins using laser energy, while sclerotherapy involves a series of small injections of a solution into smaller more superficial veins.

Who is a good candidate for EVLA?

Any patient that suffers from varicose vein disease and is in good general health is a good candidate for EVLA. Patients that are pregnant or have a history of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) are not. Patients should be thoroughly evaluated by a physician and require an ultrasound to determine if EVLA is the best treatment option for them.

How is EVLA performed?

EVLA is a 45 minute procedure where a catheter is inserted into the defective vein. The procedure is done under local anesthesia using ultrasound guidance. A laser is threaded into the catheter and heats the lining of the vein. Then it is slowly pulled out of the vein, damaging it and causing it to shrink and seal shut. Once this happens, blood can no longer flow through the vein. This eliminates the pressure in the vein that caused it to bulge. There is no incision other than a small puncture where the catheter was inserted.

What are the risks associated with EVLA?

Complications from EVLA are extremely rare. These may include numbness and tingling over the treated area, skin infection at the puncture site, DVT (deep vein thrombosis or blood clot which is rare) and phlebitis, which is redness, warmth and swelling of the treated vein. To minimize any risk associated with EVLA, we encourage patients to walk a lot after the procedure, wearing compression stockings and following up with a post procedure ultrasound.

What is the recovery time?

Patients are immediately able to get up and walk following the procedure. They may experience some mild soreness, redness and bruising in the week following the procedure, but this is usually resolved by the end of the second week. Some patients may also feel a pulling sensation or tightness in the calf or thigh, but this is normal and soon passes as well. These symptoms can be managed by taking a non-aspirin anti-infl ammatory for a few days following the procedure. Compression stockings are also required for a week or two following EVLA. This helps reduce swelling, protects against blood clots and speeds up the recovery process. After the procedure, walking and normal daily activities are encouraged. Rigorous exercise such as running, high impact aerobics and heavy weightlifting should be avoided for a week or two to get the best possible results from the
procedure.
