FDA-Approved Drug Responsible for 100,000 Calls To Poison Control Every Year

A new study examines the dangers posed by acetaminophen

Atlanta — Five hundred people are expected to die this year after taking the over-the-counter (OTC) drug Tylenol™ and other versions of acetaminophen.  According to a new study published in the Journal of Hepatology, this common pain reliever causes 46% of all cases of liver failure in America and 100,000 calls to U.S. Poison Control Centers every year. People can find themselves needing a liver transplant within hours of taking too many Tylenols™, and they are less likely to get a transplant because they’re sicker than other liver failure patients, including hepatitis patients.

According to the new study, acetaminophen is responsible for 50,000 emergency room visits and 10,000 hospitalizations every year.  The line between a dose that causes liver failure and a dose that relieves pain is very fine. Even though it causes almost half of all cases of acute liver failure in the U.S., acetaminophen is sold over-the-counter (OTC).  The FDA has approved over 600 acetaminophen products–everything from OTC sleep aids to prescription acetaminophen-opioid drugs.
According to 2015 data from America’s Poison Control Centers, acetaminophen and other analgesics are the number one cause of poisoning overall, and the number one cause of pediatric death. Acetaminophen should “go away”, according to author William M. Lee, and be replaced by a nontoxic alternative.  Even though the FDA has attributed some acetaminophen poisonings to the fact that people aren’t aware the drug is in the products they’re taking, the agency has taken no significant steps to stop the poisonings.
“Every year, FDA-approved drugs kill hundreds of thousands of people,” said Gretchen DuBeau, Executive and Legal Director for the Alliance for Natural Health USA. “The numbers are astounding, yet too often the spotlight is on dietary supplements, products which are overwhelmingly safe and beneficial for the millions of Americans who take them to the stay healthy. This study is a reminder of the real threat to our health and safety.”
