All too frequently we talk with patients suffering from headaches that have no answers, no solutions and no place to turn and that is simply not ok.

Let me see into a crystal ball and tell a story similar to yours or someone you know with headaches. The headaches began years ago, multiple tests, scans, blood work, etc. have been completed and there is “no cause” that explains where these headaches are coming from. You take “preventative” medication although it is really not preventing but more like it minimizes the intensity sometimes. e headaches are worse with stress or certain triggers and may be worse during specific times of the month at which you take another medication to minimize the effects. Hopefully, it doesn’t last too long, but pretty much the headaches stop the day in its tracks! Sometimes these headaches last for a few days or even longer. You basically are just hoping and praying that a headache does not happen because when it does, it’s miserable. Oh, and that’s not to mention the regular, throbbing headaches that still happen on a daily basis but you can manage those kinds of headaches!

I want you to know that there is another outcome that is possible! The truth is there are many possible causes of migraines, but these causes do not always show up on an MRI or CT scan or other advanced imaging.

It is very important to test things such as food sensitivities, vitamin or mineral deficiencies, in inflammation markers in blood work, and possibly even toxicity testing may be necessary. But one of the most common causes of headaches and migraines is tension and stress on neurologic and soft tissue structures such as ligaments, tendons, and muscles in the neck caused by poor alignment and function in the spine, called cervicogenic headaches. Loss of optimal position in the spine and vertebral joints can occur due to slips, falls, sports injuries, and car accidents but most commonly loss of normal position and alignment is caused by bad posture because we spend so much time sitting, looking down, or working in a forward flexed position. This loss of position causes tension on the very sensitive, neurologic structures in the spine. That means damage or misalignment of the spine can create tension on these delicate, neurological structures. Irritation to these neurologic structures causes inflammation which creates dysfunction and pain.

We analyze this scenario through examination, digital x-ray, and computerized nerve scans. It is then that we devise a treatment plan that aims to correct the cause of the problem based on what is found through testing. It’s really that simple. Of course, there can be other causes that require advanced testing, but honestly, most of our patients have already had that testing done.

The important idea here is, find the true cause of the problem and then find a care plan that aims to correct the cause rather than simply managing the symptoms of the problem. If this is what you are looking for, please call our office for a free evaluation to determine if we can help.
