What Happens after Total Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

Studying our Patients Progress after Surgery
Dr. Gobezie is passionate about closely following his patients’ outcomes to surgery. Not all surgeons take the time to do this. Before surgery, we ask all our patients to complete a standardized questionnaire about their shoulder. We continue to follow each patient’s improvement at certain time points after surgery. Pairing these standardized surveys with follow-up visits gives our practice a concrete way to measure our patients’ outcomes.

What do our results mean?
The data we have studied from patients we have treated at the Cleveland Shoulder Institute shows above-average patient-reported outcomes in regards to pain and function. Published studies have indicated that the more times a surgeon performs a surgery, the better the patient outcomes. Additionally, high volume surgeons are able to provide value-based care that has better outcomes over cost. Dr. Gobezie is not only a top performing surgeon in Ohio, but also one of the most experienced and efficient in the country. Each year, he performs more than 350 shoulder replacements and more than 400 arthroscopic shoulder procedures.

Physical Therapy
When an injury or illness have left you in pain or with limited mobility, physical therapy can help get you back on track and recover faster. Physical therapy is used to help people of all ages and medical conditions. Physical therapy involves customizing simple movements and exercises for the patient to follow on a regular schedule for a short or extended amount of time. Exercises may be done with a therapist in our office and then at home. The movements are designed to increase range of motion, strengthen muscles, increase flexibility, and reduce pain. Often, an individual’s program will encourage lifestyle changes that will prevent further injury and improve overall health and longevity.

A non-invasive and conservative approach to managing conditions, physical therapy is often one of the first modalities a doctor will prescribe to help patients. The exercises often take minimal effort, but do require a commitment to a training schedule for best results.

The Cleveland Shoulder Institute offers physical therapy services furnished with state-of-the-art equipment. Our therapists are continually training on the latest in injury prevention, optimal function, and sports performance.

Cleveland Shoulder Institute Leads the Way with Innovative Surgery, Patient Satisfaction

One of the Most Experienced Shoulder Doctors in the Country is Right Here in Cleveland.

The Cleveland Shoulder Institute treats patients with all types of shoulder and elbow disorders resulting from traumatic injuries, arthritis, instabilities, rotator cuff, and sports-related injuries. Led by nationally recognized Orthopedic Surgeon, Reuben Gobezie, MD, the Institute provides both surgical and non-operative treatments.

Dr. Gobezie is one of the country’s top specialists in advanced arthroscopic and open surgical techniques to restore damaged joints, ligaments and bones. He is also one of the most experienced and highest volume shoulder surgeons in the country and leads the way in advancing outpatient shoulder procedures. A number of studies have shown that surgical volume, the number of surgeries a surgeon performs each year, is a strong predictor of patient outcome. The more surgeries a doctor and his surgical team perform, the better the results for patients.

Dr. Gobezie is a pioneering shoulder surgeon having developed the first cartilage transplant procedure for the shoulder performed arthroscopically. He has also developed advanced new techniques for treating biceps and tendon injuries in athletes. Along with Dr. Laurent Lafosse, a world leader in arthroscopic shoulder reconstruction, Dr. Gobezie developed a minimally invasive total shoulder replacement in France. In 2015, Dr. Gobezie received the NEER Award, the most prestigious international research award in shoulder surgery. He lectures at many prominent venues nationally and around the world.

In 2010, Dr. Gobezie was elected to American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, the most prestigious specialty society in the United States for shoulder and elbow surgeons. He also received the Patients’ Choice Award, given to physicians who have received near perfect scores as voted by patients. Dr. Gobezie is a five-year Patient’s Choice award winner, an honor presented to less than 1% of physicians nationally and the result of online patient ratings of their medical care. Additionally, Dr. Gobezie is consistently ranked on the Top Doctors list by Castle Connolly through peer nomination and extensive screening of doctors across the US.
