I quickly realized my passion for making furniture and the rewarding conclusion of installing a project that I had built. With a dedication to my craft and passion for my work, word spread and my business quickly grew. Today, Daso’s Custom Cabinetry is no longer making cabinetry out of a garage; we have a 10,000 square foot manufacturing and ? finishing facility with a showroom. We currently employ over 20 people, majority have been with us since the beginning and we all share that same passion that began in that small garage over 10 years ago. We are certainly not the largest cabinetry company in the in the area but what I will claim is our quality of workmanship with customer service that is setting a new standard in the cabinetry industry and we are here to stay.

By Joshua Trentine, OVERLOAD Fitness

Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food
– Hippocrates summarizes my position on supplements, including the use of vitamins, minerals, herbs/botanicals, powders, shakes, bars, and sports performance supplementation. Before we look closer at legitimate health benefits of supplementation, it’s important to remember that a supplement is something added to complete a thing, make up for a deficiency, or extend or strengthen a whole. A supplement usually doesn’t provide any additional
benefit, enhancement or protective effect if there is not a deficiency.

Americans spend over $20 billion a year on supplements. Most of this money is wasted. This multi-billion dollar industry is fueled by marketing hype, unrealistic expectations, poorly applied or incomplete science, and the consumers’ thirst for the next magic pill. I would rather see that $20 billion put into small family farms, which are the backbone of a community, a nation and a society. A landscape of family farms is settled, balanced, stable, and generally sustainable. This lifestyle provides the greatest opportunity for nutrient dense food and for optimal health.

Why don’t we follow Hippocrates’ advice? That is the billion dollar question. Any and every vital element for our health or performance is or was once present in man’s food supply. In theory, we should be able to obtain any and every nutrient we need for optimal health from the food we eat; however, this is nearly impossible as our food supply has become nutritionally depleted by current food processing and farming practices.

In 1936, some astute scientists revealed that nutrients and trace minerals necessary for healthy plants were not added back into the soil by commercial fertilizers. For example, in 80 years, the amount of calcium in apples has dropped 48%, phosphorous 84%, iron 96%, and magnesium 82%. The significant drops in mineral levels and vitamin reductions are
occurring in all of our fresh food. In addition to our fruits and vegetables, the same process is happening with our chicken, beef, rice, etc.

In today’s society, we start with a nutrient depleted food supply. The food is then processed to remove the enzymes and allow for a longer shelf life. Lastly, the food is cooked and/or placed in the microwave, which further inactivates many of the nutrients and food factors. What’s the answer? Food supplements, right? Maybe, but let’s look at a few steps that should be taken prior to deciding on supplementation:

We should keep in mind the golden rule when it comes to the optimization of our nutrition supply: “how it is in nature (or its closest form) is how it should be.” The first step any concerned consumer should take to fortify their diet is to consider their food supply. Fresh produce and meats from a small organic farm or local farmers market are far more nutrient dense than frozen products in Wal-Mart.

Next, take these organically grown foods and prepare them in ways that will provide the most nutrient density. For example, one may drink a daily green juice to boost nutrient density. Remember our rule about how it is in nature? When we begin to isolate certain food parts we can’t project the
final outcome. Modern science still does not trump Mother Nature. When foods are eaten in their organic, unprocessed form, or in close concentrate form, we receive benefits of synergy, balanced nutrient profiles, and associated enzymes for proper absorption. We simply can’t dump in massive amounts of “food parts” and believe we can derive optimal benefit as this may lead to a greater imbalance in the system.

Finally, if we believe we might require a specific nutrient that has gone deficient in our food supply, use reliable lab and testing procedures before taking random supplements; more often than not this will throw the system off further. Your nutritionist or M.D. may look at blood work or even hair tissue mineral analysis before recommending a prescription of a supplement. The body is dynamic and specific needs vary based on quality and choice of foods, current metabolic/hormonal state, and the time of year. Regular testing is indicated when a person is consuming supplements as food “parts.”

A warm and muggy morning in March in Cleveland is astonishing enough. Macie, looking fresh and alert after already putting in a full day of work, was even more so.

“Co-anchor Mike Dunston and I are completely involved in the process of executing the newscast,” explains Macie. “We arrive around 1am (meaning she gets up at 11p) and the entire team goes to work as one. One of the reasons I took this job is that I am not afraid to roll up my sleeves and go to work. I actually love it.” As luck would have it, WEWS management specically looked to recruit an anchor team who develop and write stories, push the creative envelope of the newsroom staff , and in Macie’s case, provide perspective to Cleveland’s culture and clarity on things like pronunciation.

Macie returned to Cleveland television news in February this year after a 12 year absence. McInnis (her maiden name) first called Cleveland home 17 years ago in 1994. She and husband Gary Jepson arrived here from Shreveport, Louisiana to debut Fox 8’s Good Day Cleveland with co-anchor Bill Martin. Macie and Gary arrived as newlyweds, and six
years later had their family well under way.

Fast forward about a dozen years to last June. Then living in the Dallas area, Macie noted her incoming phone call showed a 216 Cleveland area code. It was WEWS News Director Jill Manual. “Macie, would you ever consider coming back to Cleveland?”, asked Ms. Manual. Without missing a beat, Macie replied, “As a matter of fact, if I were to move my
family anywhere in the country, it would be for Cleveland.” And so began the second chapter in Cleveland, Ohio for the Jepson family.

I asked Macie why Cleveland? Without hesitation she answered me. “This was a family move first; a career move second. Our six years here the frst time introduced us to wonderful friends, to a city proud of its history and heritage, and to a medical community second to none. In 1997 I nearly lost my life and the life of my unborn ? rst daughter.
University Hospitals saved our lives.”

Macie quickly lightens the mood as she remembers and wipes a few tears from her eyes. “By the way, my husband Gary was not at all keen about being in Ohio back then. Although both our daughters were technically born in Cleveland, Gary was determined to honor his home town roots and have his children born on ‘Texas soil.’ He placed a big bag of Texas soil under my delivery bed…for both girls.”

Yours truly, the author of this article paused and asked, “You want me to print that?” “Heck yes,” says a smiling Macie. “I tell that story to anyone who will listen.”

According to Macie, Gary’s indifference towards Cleveland was more bark than bite. “While still in Cleveland the first time, and in 2000, I received a job offer from WFAA in Texas. The time was right to make a career move and I accepted. In the 11th hour – and much too late to change our plans – Gary admitted that leaving Cleveland might be a
mistake. Now we are back and don’t intend to repeat that mistake.”

Venous insufficiency is one of the most common medical conditions with roughly one in five Americans affected by the condition to some extent. While the most common form of the condition is varicose veins, it can appear in other forms, such as leg swelling, the development of smaller spider veins, and multiple symptoms such as aching, throbbing, heaviness, tiredness, muscle cramps, and restlessness of the legs.

Traditional medicine has often taken the approach that the only time that leg veins justify treatment is when large bulging varicose veins are present, or if the patient has some combination of the most severe symptoms listed. In this sense, only around half of patients with documented venous insufficiency and symptoms would have been referred for any degree of treatment. If they were lucky, they might just be told to wear stockings for the rest of their lives, but often they were told that nothing could be done for them, or that it “just goes with being a woman,” and that for some reason they are obligated to just “put up with it”. Why is this?

One of the primary reasons that doctors have been hesitant to refer their patients for treatment of their leg veins is that until the past decade, the standard traditional approach to treating the condition was surgical— vein stripping, or some variation thereof. This meant the surgical removal of the troubled veins, forcing the patient to undergo general anesthesia and a procedure of one to three hours’ length. While the veins were generally removed successfully, the recurrence rate for the procedure typically ranged from twenty to fifty percent over the following five years. In some cases, patients have reported that their veins actually looked and felt WORSE at some point after going through all of that!

Today, modern medicine is now providing treatment that is more efficient, safer, less painful, and more convenient than ever before. Once an accurate diagnosis is made via a vascular ultrasound, only then can an appropriate treatment path be outlined for a patient.

One particular treatment known as endovenous laser ablation, or EVLA, has become a standard approach to treating valve leakage in the saphenous veins and other large branch veins in the legs. This approach allows the patient to undergo an extremely safe office procedure that is often only 20 minutes or so in length, with only local anesthesia and no hospital time needed. The patient is back on their feet immediately, with no down time, an immediate return to most activities, and minimal post-treatment discomfort.

Again, when performed by a physician who is qualified and skilled in the procedure, the results of EVLA are highly effective, with a success rate typically above 97% nationally. At the Circulatory Centers, where we have been dedicated to vein treatment for more than 30 years, we have been using this particular approach to treating leg veins for nearly a decade, and our results have been better than ever, with patients seeing better clearing of their leg veins, better resolution of their symptoms and fewer recurrences of their veins than ever before. None of this would be possible without the advances of modern technology!

A Great Getaway and Event Location

Summer travel this year will probably not include destinations that require purchasing of airfare. Airlines have already pushed through two price increases this year, and it’s only March, when leisure travel is slow. It’s a sign of things to come. “You’ll see gradual increases and then a much bigger jump in April and May when people start shopping for the summer travel season,” says Rick Seaney, CEO of travel website FareCompare.com. About 75 percent of leisure travel is not essential,” says George Hobica of the travel website airfarewatchdog.com. “I think you’ll see more people stay at home, or they’ll drive to closer locations.”
Just three hours away in Southwest Michigan is the award winning Chicago Pike Inn & Spa. This unique historical getaway offers Victorian furnishings and décor with many modern conveniences such as air conditioning, wireless internet, cable television and DVD players. Delicious meals prepared by Nancy and served in the well appointed formal dining room gives you the sense of luxury in a comfortable homelike setting. The beautiful rural area also offers many attractions from golfing to antiquing.

History of the Inn
Morris G. Clarke built his home at 215 East Chicago Street in 1903. Mr. Clarke hired a Chicago Architect, Ashbury Buckley, who had designed many of the homes in Mackinac Island in the late 1800’s. Mr. Clarke, who was a Coldwater merchant, built a Colonial Reform style, with massive Greek Revival columns. When the Clarke mansion was fi nished, it had cost him a
total of $15,000.00. In 1936 after Mr. and Mrs. Clarke deceased, sons Charles and Edwin sold the property to a family that turned it into a rooming house.
Harold and Jane Schultz bought the Clarke home in the fall of 1988, and completely restored it to the splendor you see today. On June 20, 1989, the beautiful Clarke mansion was opened as a Bed & Breakfast, known as the Chicago Pike Inn. The six guest rooms in the main house have all been furnished with antiques and each one has a special elegance. The two suites in the Carriage House were built in 1995 and have in-room jacuzzis.
In 2005 Nancy Krajny purchased the Inn and renamed it Chicago Pike Inn & Spa, now including an on sight beauty salon and massage room. The Inn & Spa is great for a quaint anniversary or birthday, showers or bridal party getaway, with special spa packages available.

By Cindy Marx, Practice Manager, Raj Plastic Surgery

Men and women both suffer from one of the most tell tale signs of aging: sagging skin of the neck. If you fi nd you are buying more turtle necks, wearing more scarves and shying away from photographs it may be the right time for you to say goodbye to the turkey wattle!

Nora Ephron, director of Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally, understands the plight of women as we age. Her book of essays, “ I Feel Bad About My Neck,” speaks well to how once the neck goes there is little one can do to camoufl age that loose skin – there is no skin care product or skin tightening “treatment” that can do the “trick” of minimizing the hanging skin, loose muscles and neck banding like a neck lift surgical procedure.

I was tired of looking tired and defl ated and decided, instead of investing in more scarves and turtle neck sweaters, I would invest in myself and have a neck lift procedure to tighten the muscles and remove the excess skin that causes the “wattle effect.” I thought it was the best time to add upper and lower eyelid procedures while having my neck lift which would allow me to recover from both surgeries at one time. Voila! – My profile is transformed and I appear more youthful without the looking like I had cosmetic surgery.

There is no one best time for a neck lift procedure, young and old can benefit from a neck lift. If one is unhappy with the appearance of his or her neck one should seek a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss surgical options to reduce turkey wattle neck, excess fat, or hanging skin.

If you, too, would like to refresh your appearance, call our office to schedule a consultation to discuss your goals so that we can offer you options to help you invest in yourself. I am happy to share my experiences with you.
Please call our office at 440.808.8030 to schedule a complimentary

People everywhere are setting their alarms earlier and earlier to get a head start on their days. The reasons range from wanting to beat rush hour or jumping on the treadmill, to having quiet time to check email, slug down some coffee and catch the early news.

Define “early news.”

Well, in Cleveland and other cities around the country, it is now defined as 4:30am.

WEWS NewsChannel 5 wasted no time reacting to the expectations of its early rising viewers and quickly restructured its news cycles. Station management also went in search of the best early morning anchor team it could find.

Jill Manuel, NewsChannel 5 news director, was familiar with one time local news anchor Macie McInnis, now Macie Jepson. From 1994 to 1999, she anchored at WJW Fox 8 at various times throughout the day.

“Announcing Macie as one of our morning news anchors is another step in strengthening this very important news daypart,” explains Ms. Manuel. “Many viewers already know Macie, and her knowledge of the people, places, and things that matter to Northeast Ohioans will be advantageous to everyone who engages with NewsChannel 5 in the morning on-air, online, and through our social media platforms.”

“Not only was my family thrilled to return to this city that is rich with culture, history and incredibly real people, I am excited about returning to Morning News,” Jepson says.

“We have a responsibility to prepare our viewers for the day. It’s my desire to do it with a delicate combination of know-how and warmth.” Macie has earned several honors for her work, including “Medical Reporter of the Year” from the March of Dimes, as well as the 2006

American Women in Radio and Television “Personality of the Year” award.

The next step for station management was to identify the other half of this very important team. Mike Dunston, most recently from Orlando station WFOL, completes the team. Like

Macie, Mike is not a stranger to NE Ohio. “I started my journalism career in Ohio and really got to know and to love the down-to-earth demeanor, and the culture of integrity among many people in the Buckeye state,” reflects Mike.

Community work is important to Mike. . He’s most proud of his work hosting a series of reports on adoption, helping to move children from foster care to permanent loving homes.

Macie and Mike debuted on NewsChannel 5 January 9th and joined meteorologist Christine Ferreira, Traffi c Anchor/Reporter Alicia Roberts, and Multimedia Journalist Josh Boose.

By the way, in Macie and Mike’s world, 4:30am is late. In order to be at the top of their game so the news they deliver to us at that early hour is timely, accurate and relevant, they set their alarms to go off before midnight.

“It’s tough coming in so early working the ‘vampire shift,’ but it’s worth it,” says Mike. “Macie and I really wanted to be a part of the process, helping to fi nd the newest stories and newest angles so the news is fresh for the people at home.”

And Macie adds, “It helps that I’m a napper. I can sleep anywhere, anytime.”

Q. I hear people, but sometimes I just don’t seem to understand all of what’s been said. I never experienced this problem before. What’s wrong?

A. I often hear from my patients, “I can hear them, I just don’t understand them.” They say “I can hear some people better than others,” or “I often have to turn the television up so loud, my spouse complains.”

These people most likely have a high frequency loss. One out of ten every 10 Americans experience some degree of hearing loss. They are missing some of the high tones which are responsible for the consonant sounds. One example would be “Th” sounds and the “Sh” sound, which are almost alike. The word “Three” comes out like “Tree,” “Shoe” sounds like “Two.” Most People with this type of hearing loss will have more difficulty understanding women and children because they normally have a higher tone in their voices.

Technology has led to many advances and today’s newer digital hearing aids make the words clearer, not just louder. Some of the products I recommend even cut down the background noises while making voices louder and clearer. People can now hear and understand in noisy situations much better than ever before. If you or a loved one is experiencing any hearing difficulties, a hearing test is important. The sooner a person gets the help they need, the better the results he or she will have.

Hearing Myths:

Myth: Most hearing problems can’t be helped…

Fact: 90% of hearing loss is very responsive to treatment

Myth: Living with a hearing loss is no big deal…

Fact: There are many psychological effects to hearing loss, including frustration, withdrawal and depression. Trouble communicating with others creates a strain on relationships ad a loss of esteem. It is far better to deal with healing loss than pretend it is not happening.

Myth: Hearing loss and wearing hearing aids are a sign of old age…

Fact: There are more hearing impaired people in the 45-64 age group than there are in the over 65 age group. It is becoming more popular to reach out to get treatment than to ignore the problem.
