CVS Health Takes Major Step to Address Chemicals of Consumer Concern

Parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors will be removed from extensive line of store brand beauty and personal care products.

CVS Pharmacy (NYSE:CVS), America’s leading retail pharmacy, took a major step forward in advancing its efforts to address chemicals of consumer concern by announcing the removal of parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors across nearly 600 beauty and personal care products from its store brand CVS Health, Beauty 360, Essence of Beauty, and Blade product lines. The Promise Organic line of store brand products also does not contain any of these ingredients. CVS Pharmacy will stop shipping store brand products that don’t meet these standards to distribution centers by the end of 2019.

As a company driven by its purpose of helping people on their path to better health, this latest action is a significant milestone in its journey toward more sustainable products that satisfy consumer expectations. “We are committed to providing our customers with the safe, efficacious products that they are looking for,” said Cia Tucci, vice president of store brands and Quality Assurance at CVS Health. “We listened when customers voiced their desire for products that still provide the benefits they need with fewer ingredients of concern. Today’s announcement is a natural step in the evolution of our comprehensive approach to chemical safety.”
While all store brand products have always been subject to stringent standards of safety, quality and environmental responsibility and – at a minimum – meet all federal and state requirements, customer feedback has driven this move to eliminate parabens, phthalates and the most prevalent formaldehyde donors.  In addition to listening to customers, CVS Health has also engaged with industry experts and key advocacy groups to ensure that product quality can be maintained through this transition. Over the past several years, CVS Health has engaged with the Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families (SCHF) coalition and its Mind the Store campaign, an organization working to reduce the use of toxic chemicals in consumer products, strengthen the understanding of chemicals of consumer concern and inform opportunities for retailers to advance chemical safety in consumer products.
“This announcement is an exciting milestone not only for CVS Health, but for retailers and the role they play in driving change toward safer consumer products,” said Mike Schade, Mind the Store campaign director for Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families. “We applaud CVS Health for the action it is taking today and we look forward to continued collaboration ahead.  We hope other retailers will follow suit.”The evolution of CVS Health’s chemical policy builds off a foundation laid over the last decade to advance its chemical management efforts. In 2007, the company became the first major drugstore to establish a Cosmetic Safety Policy in 2008. Since then, CVS Health has made substantial progress toward sustainable chemical management, including the launch of the WERCSmart tool in 2013 to ensure suppliers register ingredient information for all chemical-based products. In 2016, CVS Health became the first major pharmacy chain in the country to become a signatory of the Chemical Footprint Project.

“Our consumers expect both transparency and quality when it comes to ingredients in the products they use,” said Eileen Howard Boone, senior vice president of CSR and philanthropy at CVS Health. “This is an important step, and we look forward to continuing to work with stakeholders to address additional chemicals of consumer concern and focus on more product categories in the future.

Protect Yourself From the Sun

sunshine with shadesWe all find sunshine therapeutic as a mood booster. However, sunshine can have dangers as well as benefits. Sun damaged skin from sunburn or chronic exposure is the major cause of skin cancer. Doctors believe that most skin cancers can be avoided by using proper prevention. Sun damaged skin also contributes to premature aging. Repeated sun damage skin will look thicker, leathery and wrinkled. It can cause age spots, fragile and sagging skin.

The best way to avoid the dangers of the sun is to stay of out of the sun, but for most of us that is not realistic. Thus, when we go outside below I offer a few tips to minimize the sun’s harmful effects.

1) Always wear sunscreen  Sunscreens are variable by type of ingredients and the SPF. SPF stands for sun protection factor. The SPF number tells you how the product will protect you from the burning rays of the sun-UVB. Most sunscreens will protect you from UVA rays- the second major ray of the sun too. Everyone should wear a minimum of SPF 30. If you have had skin cancer, then use a sunscreen with even higher SPF. Everyone is recommended to wear sunscreen including children greater than 6 months old. Recently, a researcher reported that if sunscreens were used regularly by children through the age of 18, there would be a 72% reduction in the cases of skin cancer later in life.

The ingredients are important because they offer different types of protection. For complete block, look for titanium dioxide or zinc oxide.

I also recommend a natural plant based option. Several people report regular Cataplex F use can prevent sunburn used in conjunction with SPF.

2) Wear sunglasses that filter the UV light.

3) Wear protective clothing. Some clothes today provide SPF in fabric in addition to clothing being a basic layer of protection. Wear a wide brimmed hat to provide more shade and protection.

4) Avoid the “hot” sun in the middle of the day. This is about 10am-3pm. The ultraviolet rays which cause sunburn are strongest during this time.

Treating damaged skin

Even if we try to prevent sun burn, sometimes it happens. Several skin treatments with medical grade skin care products, chemical peels or optical light laser can stimulate collagen and elastin to gain tightening and elasticity for a more youthful appearance. Laser can help diminish broken blood vessels and brown spots from sun damage skin. I also recommend an annual skin check from your doctor or a dermatologist.

Let’s not forget the sun’s benefits.

Vitamin D is important for many processes in the body. Muscle, prostate, bone health and immunity to name a few. It also plays a role in sugar and mood balance. You can get Vitamin D from: 1) Food 2) Sun 3) Supplements

Vitamin D is tough to get in your diet. It is only present in a few foods. It is naturally present in fatty fish like salmon and shellfish. Other foods like milk and fresh orange juice are fortified by the manufacturing industry.

We need sunlight for our bodies to make Vitamin D. It does not require a lot either. Only 10-15 minutes of sun exposure with no SPF is required to generate Vitamin D.

Since most adults don’t get enough Vitamin D in their diet or get enough sun exposure because of wearing sunscreen to prevent risk of skin cancer, supplements are necessary to get the recommended daily dosing. You can use Vitamin D3 over the counter. You can also use a plant based supplement from Standard Process, which from my experience gets absorbed very well. I offer both to my patients. I recommend you see your doctor to get your Vitamin D levels measured initially and a follow up. I recommend follow up levels because a leading test center reported that over 30+ brands of Vitamin D supplements tested, the average contained 33% of the dose on the level. There was also variability from bottle to bottle of the same manufacturer. Make sure your body gets what it needs and what you paid for.

Enjoy your summer. May the warmth of the suns rays make you feel good on the inside while you protect your skin on the outside.

Why Choose a Pediatric Dentist?

Your child not only has a different development and arrangement of their teeth than adults, but may have specific dental and behavioral needs that are unique to a child. These needs may include dental sealants, fluoride applications, home treatments, or just simply education in oral hygiene. In addition to treating existing dental problems, our office focuses on prevention through patient education. Our mission is to give our patients the best and most advanced dental care possible to enjoy a cavity-free future.

Natural Dentistry! No Needles! No Drills! No Pain!

With cutting edge technology like the dental laser, Brunswick KiDDS uses this laser energy and a gentle spray of water to perform a wide range of dental procedures, without the vibration and pressure associated with the dental drill which are the primary causes of pain. Doctors have used lasers for years to provide better care for their patients.

Now, thanks to Brunswick KiDDS, you can benefit from advanced laser technology for your child’s dental care. Without the use of the drill, our lasers allow us to perform many dental procedures without shots, without the need for anesthesia, and without any numbing at all! Also, our lasers reduce the amount of bleeding, post-operative pain, swelling, and the need for pain medication after treatment! Brunswick KiDDS’ Lasers are extremely precise and accurate in their ability to remove tooth decay. Since they use light energy, they can eliminate even microscopic amounts of bacteria and infection while leaving surrounding areas unaffected. As a result, we can often treat all areas of decay in one or two appointments, reducing the amount of anxiety that build up every time your child has to come back for treatment! It is the natural way of doing dentistry.

Have You Had Your Child Evaluated for Braces?

The American Association for Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7. Early detection and treatment gives your child the edge – a much better chance for natural and normal development. One advantage of having Brunswick KiDDS for your child’s dental home is that we monitor their growth and development on a regular basis. Our parents truly appreciate having orthodontic treatment done in our office. This allows them to coordinate cleaning and check-up appointments with orthodontic appointments. By working with the natural growth instead of against it, we can prevent problems from becoming worse, and give your child a lifetime of healthy smiles! Studies have shown that people who have straight healthy teeth are more likely to smile more. This can lead to a greater self-esteem which may lead to a more fulfilling life.

Dr. Milton and Dr. Brittany are pediatric dentists, specializing in the treatment and prevention of dental disease, as well as the overall oral health of children. Through extra years of schooling, training, experience, and certification, a pediatric dentist is uniquely qualified to treat the dental needs of infants, children, adolescents, and those with special health care needs. Dr. Milton, Dr. Brittany and their team regularly attend seminars and conferences devoted to new treatments, new technologies and excellent patient care practices.

The Happy Emoticon Effect: Changing Facial Contours to Turn that Frown Upside Down

Study demonstrates the social impact of a unique facial rejuvenation approach

TAMPA, Fla., March 3, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — Improving facial expressions through natural-looking surgical rejuvenation greatly improves social acceptance, according to “The Emoticon Effect,” an original study from Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Christian Drehsen, M.D., that explores the link between facial expression vectors and social response.

beforeafterFor years, scientists have studied how humans perceive and classify emotions based on common facial vectors. Findings have shown that downward vectors – commonly associated with frowning – universally convey negative emotions, while upward vectors – such as smiling – convey positive emotions and youthfulness.

“Facial expressions and emoticons alike are instantly understood, as they symbolize with a few lines or ‘vectors’ universal human emotions or state of mind,” said Dr. Drehsen, Medical Director of Clinique of Plastic Surgery, located in St. Petersburg, Fla. “Unfortunately, as we age, these vectors often create unflattering and misinterpreted expressions that at times trigger discrimination, indifference or prejudice.”

The Emoticon Effect, which was published in the American Journal of Cosmetic Surgery, concludes that by improving facial vectors in a uniquely natural looking facial rejuvenation, patients will benefit from a much greater social desirability than before the procedure.

The study asked 80 medical students to rate a random selection of before and after photos of patients who underwent facial rejuvenation in terms of social acceptance. The students were asked to rate photos on a scale of one to five – one being very pleasant and they would like to meet them, and five being unpleasant and they do not wish to meet them.

For the purpose of the study, facial rejuvenation included a vertical Refresher Lift, modulated Dual Plane Brow Lift and sectional fat grafting. The Refresher Lift, a groundbreaking facial rejuvenation process developed by Dr. Drehsen, uses upward facial vectors as a guide to restore vitality and youthfulness to the face.

“This study amply supports the need for a paradigm shift in the planning of facial rejuvenation procedures,” said Dr. Drehsen. “While many celebrities seek out ‘quick lifts’ or other miraculous nips and tucks to mimic youth for their aging face, most of these blatantly obvious transformations rarely produce the expected positive responses from their social environment.”

Looking for a NATURAL Approach to YOUR Beauty Regiment?

By Linda Machalicek, Dolcé Organic Salon

Well, you don’t have to look very far. I opened Dolcé Organic Salon in September 2008 after a life-threatening battle with pancreatic cancer. I developed a genuine interest in new and ancient organic and holistic approaches to beauty during my illness.

Dolcé Organic Salon is a new type of salon offering toxin-free, natural hair coloring, manicures and pedicures for women and men and the only salon of its kind in Northeast Ohio. I wanted to open a salon that embraced a philosophy of a natural approach to beauty. The best thing about our hair color is what we leave out; you no longer need to use hair color products that contain ammonia. Organic Color Systems uses a natural, non-ammonia based method to open the hair cuticle for color penetration. It doesn’t give off offensive fumes or damage your hair. The hair retains its natural moisture and essential protein balance. This creates beautiful, more natural looking colors that last longer.

We pride ourselves on being not only healthy and organic, but innovative. So we are INTRODUCING our new product line “Unwash.” The latest rage in hair care right now is cowashing, but what does it actually mean? After years and years of being told that the proper way to achieve clean, healthy hair is by using a shampoo followed by a conditioner, we’ve become accustomed to this two-step method. But what many of us don’t realize is that the majority of shampoos out there contain harsh detergents (sodium lauryl sulfates and sodium chloride) which not only strip the hair of essential oils that protect, moisturize and add shine to hair, but which also can cause a dry scalp, flaking and over time the breakage of strands.

Essentially, it’s just an ongoing cycle of stripping and replenishing. Luckily, we’ve now entered a new era, the era of cowashing and cleansing hair in just one step! The idea of cowashing, which stands for conditioner washing, was derived using the notion that hair should be treated exactly as it was created to the body — as an asset. Hair follicles and strands are not “alive” like the rest of the body and as such need to be nurtured rather than stripped.

Cowashing is cleansing the hair with conditioner instead of shampoo. Rather than using detergents, there’s a conditioner-like formula void of any harsh surfactants that can dry out hair. Excess oils and buildup are safely and gently washed away while the cuticle of hair is left undisturbed, unharmed and perfectly intact. I like to call it the “intelligent” approach to ideal hair care.

Schedule or stop in to our Salon to experience our new innovative product “Unwash” and you can discover the best way of cleansing to maintain an overall moisture balance and optimal scalp and beautiful healthy hair.

New Year, New You. Q & A about Ultherapy

Interview conducted by Kayla Starta, a senior public relations/marketing major at Baldwin Wallace College and marketing intern at Docere Medical Spa & Laser Center.

The New Year is the perfect time to consider Ultherapy. Turn the clock back up to ten years with no surgery or downtime! Seem to good to be true? Keep reading to find out more. Leading Physician Dr. Jeff Viscomi at Docere Medical Spa & Laser Center answers some common questions regarding Ultherapy, and how you can achieve a fresher, tighter more youthful look.

Q: What is Ultherapy?

A: Ultherapy is a non-surgical procedure for the face and neck that stimulates the body’s own natural healing process to lift the skin over time. The use of FDA-cleared ultrasound technology enables physicians, for the first time, to see and then treat the deepest support layers of the skin – typically addressed in cosmetic surgery – without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.

It is an ideal cosmetic procedure for those looking for natural yet noticeable results.

Q: How does this procedure work if it’s non-invasive?

A: Ultherapy uses two beams of ultra sound that pass through the skin. With just one Ultherapy treatment, the lifting process is initiated, but the effect will build gradually over the course of two to three months, as new, stronger collagen and elastin are created. Further improvements can even appear up to six months following a procedure as this collagen-building process continues.

Q: Will it hurt?

A: Some clients experience virtually no pain, while others have a more heightened sense of discomfort. Our staff will work with you to ensure your comfort during the procedure.

Q: How does Ultherapy differ from laser treatments?

A: Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin to treat depths not matched by any other non-invasive cosmetic device. Lasers cannot reach the deeper layers at an optimal temperature without causing excessive damage to the superficial layers.

Q: Can Ultherapy replace a facelift?

A: While the results do not duplicate those of surgery, Ultherapy’s gradual improvements make it a compelling option for people who have mild to moderate skin laxity as well as those who want to “stay ahead of the game” and those looking to prolong the effects of cosmetic surgery.

Q: Is there any downtime after the procedure?

A: The treatment typically takes around 90-minutes. After the procedure there are no restrictions. You can use makeup, exercise, and continue your day-to-day activities.

Q: When can I expect to see results?

A: The ultrasound stimulates collagen production in the skin’s foundation, resulting in a clinically significant lift of tissue over 2-3 months.

Call today to schedule a free consultation at Docere Medical Spa & Laser Center, and book an appointment BY THE END OF DECEMBER TO RECEIVE A SPECIAL DISCOUNT. Let us help you become a more conƒ dent you, just in time for the holidays and the New Year!

See What Everyone is Talking About i-Lipo: Targeted Fat Reduction

By Cindy Marx, Practice Manager, Raj Plastic Surgery

The i-Lipo laser from Chromogenex offers a safe and effective means to achieve immediate and measurable inch loss. i-Lipo uses low-level laser technology to stimulate the body’s natural process for releasing its stored fat, shrinking those fat cells helping to re-contour the body.

The human body stores excess calories from your diet in adipose tissue. When needed, those fat cells will break down their stored triglycerides into free fatty acids, glycerol and water, providing the body with energy during times of scarcity. That same metabolic process that is induced hormonally by the brain can also be triggered by low-level laser energy delivered by i-Lipo. Exercise creates a demand in our bodies for extra energy. Exercising after an i-Lipo treatment helps to burn the fat released from an i-Lipo treatment. More effectively assisting those who already are watching their calorie intake but need an extra boost to reduce those areas of fat that seem to be resistant to exercise.

i-Lipo is a revolutionary, non-invasive body shaping technology offering convenient, safe and pain free body contouring in as little as twenty minutes, without surgery and without downtime. This noninvasive approach to fat reduction can be used year-round on all skin types.

Clinical studies have confirmed the efficacy of the i-Lipo diode laser to deliver body shaping results. Two treatments per week for four weeks are recommended. All parts of the body can be treated where fat is stored, including the waistline, thighs, arms, leg and even under the chin. Patients typically report a 10% inch loss reduction following a treatment regimen.

i-Lipo is the first direct skin contact laser designed for fat reduction and body contouring to receive FDA approval for circumferential reduction. With proper diet and exercise over the course of eight i-Lipo sessions dramatic achievements in body reshaping are noticed.
