#MeToo Moves to the Workplace: Low Wage Workers, Safety, Labor and Women’s Groups Say It’s “Our Turn”

National Council for Occupational Safety and Health Spearheads Alliance to End Sexual Harassment on the Job

Janitors, factory workers, farmworkers and other low-wage workers joined with safety, labor, anti-violence and women’s rights advocates to announce today the launch of “Our Turn,” a new alliance brought together by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health to put a halt to sexual abuse and harassment, with a special focus on low-wage and vulnerable workers.

“It’s inspiring to see movie stars and media celebrities talk about the terrible incidents they have faced in their workplaces,” said Veronica Lagunas, a janitor in Los Angeles and a member of SEIU-United Service Workers West (USSW). “A lot of us who earn a regular paycheck face the same problems, like sexual assault and physical and verbal abuse. It’s our turn to unite and take action to stop the abuse and hold abusers accountable.”

Our Turn will unite workers, community allies and organizations across the country who are fighting – and winning – new protections against abuse and harassment in union contracts, state laws, municipal ordinances and company policies.

“For far too long, sexual harassment and other forms of abuse have been rampant in workplaces of all kinds,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). “I’m glad to stand side-by-side with working people committed to ending it.”

Our Turn was convened by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH), the nation’s leading grassroots advocate for workplace safety. More than 100 organizations and individuals have already signed on to the Our TurnCommitment to Unity and Action.”  

The Our Turn steering committee includes representatives from COSH groups, labor unions, women’s organizations, and community-based organizations.  Commitments include a pledge by participating organizations to:
  • Support workplace, community and political organizing;
  • Advocate for laws and policies that protect workers and provide tools for prevention of abuse and harassment;
  • Elevate stories of workers who have fought back against abuse;
  • Hold government agencies and employers accountable for harassment and violence in workplaces they oversee.
“The movement to end sexual violence is growing – and Our Turn brings together workers’ rights, women’s rights, and anti-violence organizations to support survivors and workers in taking back their workplaces,” said Linda Seabrook, General Counsel and Director of Workplace Safety & Equity for Futures Without Violence, a national social justice organization dedicated to ending violence against women.

“Low-wage workers are fed up are saying ‘We will not tolerate abuse as a condition of earning a living,” said National COSH co-executive director Jessica Martinez. “Every worker – regardless of race, gender, income or sexual orientation – has a fundamental right to a workplace free from abuse and harassment.”

The new coalition will mobilize members and allies to promote workplace organizing, legislative advocacy and hands-on training, and also serve as a national clearinghouse for best practices and policies to prevent workplace sexual violence and abuse.

Medicare is a health insurance program that is federally facilitated for people age of 65 or older and certain younger people with disabilities or End-Stage Renal Disease. Do You Really Need to Go to the ER for That?

Aches, Breaks and Sprains are Best Treated at an Orthopedic Urgent Care Center

When the pain from a muscle or joint injury becomes unmanageable, many think they need to go to the emergency room. But the ER is primarily designed to serve potentially life-threatening emergencies, such as a head injury, heart attack or stroke.

The ER also has notoriously long wait times. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report average ER wait times to be roughly two hours. In today’s fast paced world we consume over 30% of our daily calories away from home. These less than- wholesome calories are accumulating around our waists and draining our bank accounts. So why do we eat out and shun the kitchen? Simple: convenience. We don’t have the time to toil away over a hot stove. However, evidence is mounting that we are paying big for the so-called convenience of outside food.

Obesity related diseases are on the rise, as are the number of folks who are just plain unhappy with how their bodies look and feel. Cooking at home seems to be the first step in our road to healthier bodies. Here are the top 5 reasons why you should start cooking and eating at home:

Reason #1: It’s Good for You

Hyper processed foods are harmful to our health, and that’s exactly where you’ve been getting the bulk of your calories. Even restaurant food that contains fresh produce, the chances are high that the produce is not organic or local or non-GMO. Most of us are eating less than half of the recommended amount of fiber, fruit, and vegetables, which eating at home could quickly change. Simple meals made at home with fresh produce and organic meats or eggs are nutritionally superior to over-flavored, over-processed restaurant food. Plan your entire meal around a couple of pieces of fresh produce and a wholesome, lean protein. No need for complicated sauces or sides; these are where the harmful calories hide anyway.

Fresh, simple ingredients do not cost much. Especially when compared to the cost of prepared meals. Shopping the perimeter of the store is always a good plan. Here you’ll find the fresh produce, meats, dairy, and seafood. Venture into the aisles for oils and spices to compliment the fresh ingredients.

In the U.S., the annual health care expenses related to obesity is $150 Billion, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Worldwide this number is over $1 Trillion annually. These numbers are staggering and sobering when you think of all the individual lives that are being negatively impacted by obesity. Rather than waiting for you and your family members to experience the health risks related to obesity, start your own mission to cook simple meals at home and redirect your future. In Era Of #MeToo, Majority Of Employees Say Their Employers Fail To Take New Steps Addressing Sexual Harassment

Increased efforts to prevent harassment linked to better employee and organizational outcomes, survey says

The spotlight on workplace sexual harassment since fall 2017 has led to high-profile resignations, terminations and lawsuits. And while the revelations and consequences have prompted ongoing, national conversations about appropriate behavior, only 32 percent of working Americans said that their employer has taken new steps to prevent and address sexual harassment in the workplace, according to a survey by the American Psychological Association.

According to employees, the most common action taken was simply reminding employees of existing sexual harassment training or resources (18 percent).

Workplace Sexual Harassment: Are Employers Actually Responding? from APA’s Center for Organizational Excellence was conducted online by Harris Poll from Feb. 15-March 1, 2018, among 1,512 U.S. adults who are employed full-time, part-time or self-employed. The data were collected as part of APA’s 2018 Work and Well-Being Survey. While the lack of meaningful change is not entirely surprising, it is disappointing, said David W. Ballard, PsyD, MBA, director of APA’s Center for Organizational Excellence. “The #MeToo movement has given business leaders an opportunity to finally take real action addressing a complex problem that has been pervasive for generations,” Ballard said. “Our survey – as well as anecdotal reports – shows that too few employers are making comprehensive efforts that can have significant impact. Avoiding the issue is bad for employee well-being and business, but so, too, is a narrow, compliance-based approach. We know from psychological science that relying solely on mandated training designed primarily to limit the organization’s legal liability is unlikely to be effective.”

Only 10 percent of U.S. workers said their employer has added more training or resources related to sexual harassment since the recent increased media and public attention on this serious workplace problem. Just 8 percent said their employer implemented a more stringent policy related to sexual harassment, and only 7 percent reported that their employer hosted an all-staff meeting or town hall to discuss sexual harassment.

Research has shown training to recognize and report sexual harassment isn’t enough to change employee behavior or a workplace culture where harassment is more likely to occur. Instead, psychologists recommend a comprehensive approach that incorporates fair policies that are clearly communicated, ongoing training, leadership support of a civil and respectful culture, and the hiring and promotion of women into senior leadership roles.

The survey showed the difference when women have representation in upper management. Employees in organizations that have women in senior leadership roles said they were more likely to report sexual harassment at work if they experienced it (56 percent) or witnessed it (55 percent), and confront a coworker who is engaging in inappropriate sexual behavior at work (53 percent), compared with employees in organizations that don’t have women in senior leadership roles (39 percent, 41 percent and 34 percent, respectively).

The survey also found links between increased efforts to prevent and address workplace sexual harassment and better employee and organizational outcomes more broadly. When new steps had been taken, employees were more likely to say they were in good psychological health (90 percent vs. 79 percent) and that their employer provides the necessary resources to help employees meet their mental health needs (76 percent vs. 36 percent) and manage their stress (63 percent vs. 31 percent). They also reported higher job satisfaction (86 percent vs. 60 percent) and motivation to do their best at work (89 percent vs. 64 percent) and were more likely to say they’d recommend their organization as a good place to work (79 percent vs. 51 percent), than those who said their employer had not taken any new steps.

“Sexual harassment at work occurs within a broader context,” Ballard said. “For training to produce long-term changes, the organization’s workplace practices need to align with and support the individual attitudes and behaviors it’s trying to promote. Leaders in a psychologically healthy workplace model civility, respect, fairness and trust. In an organizational culture where every employee feels safe, supported and included, people can be their best, and that’s good for people and profits.”

While most employers have been slow in taking new steps to address harassment, the ongoing headlines and resulting conversations may be encouraging individual employees to take action. About half of U.S. workers say they are now more likely to report workplace sexual harassment if they experience it (50 percent) or witness it (51 percent), and that they are more likely to confront a coworker who is engaging in inappropriate sexual behavior at work (47 percent).
